Mahendranagar, September 3

A public holiday has been declared in seven municipalities of Kanchanpur district, including Bhimdatta, Dodhara Chandni, Shuklaphanta, Punarbas, Laljhandi, and Beldandi, in celebration of the Gaura festival.

The festival holds significant cultural importance in the far-western region. Mahesh Bahadur Bam, the Chief Administrative Officer of Bhimdatta Municipality, confirmed that this decision was made by local officials to honour the festival. Additionally, a two-day local public holiday has been announced in Raxirang and Kailash for the Nwagi (Chonam) festival, celebrated by the Chepang community.

This holiday will take place on September 8 and 9, with local councils closing government offices, public organisations, and educational institutions during this time. The Chepang community observes various traditions during this period, including Rakhi Puja and offerings to ancestors, emphasising their connection to new food crops and the worship of land and nature.
