CPN-UML parliamentary party leader Ram Bahadur Thapa has called on the government to form special task forces to coordinate international assistance and compensation and lead reconstruction efforts following the Bhotekoshi flood on August 26.
Speaking at the House of Representatives meeting on Wednesday, Thapa said the government should form a special task force under the leadership of the foreign minister to coordinate international support, compensation and other assistance related to the disaster.
He also called for a separate task force led by the finance minister to oversee reconstruction.
Thapa urged Prime Minister Balen Shah to make a qualitative change in what he described as his unilateral style of governance and to keep Parliament regularly informed about the government’s plans.
He also suggested that the government immediately initiate the formation of a mechanism bringing together political parties, civil society and experts to respond to the current crisis.
Thapa called for the formation of a special parliamentary committee under the initiative of the Speaker to monitor the government, caution it when necessary and provide support in addressing the crisis.
“To confront the crisis caused by climate change, the government should immediately move ahead with the second edition of the Sagarmatha Sambaad to build international solidarity and formulate a strategy,” Thapa said.
