Nepal earned Rs 29.32 billion from electricity exports to India and Bangladesh in the fiscal year 2025/26, Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha informed Parliament.
Minister Shrestha provided the information in response to a question from Nepali Congress Chief Whip Basana Thapa regarding the country’s existing energy system and problems faced in electricity service delivery.
Shrestha said the ministry has been taking various measures to ensure a continuous and reliable electricity supply for domestic consumers.
The government has started expanding smart metering and substation automation systems in Kathmandu Valley and major cities.
Construction of new substations and the expansion and upgrading of transmission and distribution lines have also been accelerated to meet growing electricity demand in urban areas.
In industrial areas, infrastructure including dedicated feeders is being constructed and upgraded to reduce voltage fluctuations and ensure reliable power supply.
The minister said efforts would continue to strengthen the electricity distribution system and improve its reliability and quality.
Nepal Electricity Authority has also been carrying out maintenance and rehabilitation work according to a planned schedule, he said.
According to Shrestha, the authority provides advance notice of scheduled power cuts through mass media, social media and its official communication channels.
He said the authority has also started making its system for immediately informing consumers about unexpected power outages more effective.
Shrestha said the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has been operating a 24-hour hotline at 1151 to address public complaints, while Nepal Electricity Authority operates a separate 1150 hotline and a ‘No Light’ service.
He informed Parliament that 31,496 complaints had been addressed through the ministry’s hotline since the formation of the new government.
The ministry coordinates with the concerned offices and officials to facilitate the resolution of complaints received through the hotline, according to Shrestha.
