Task force formed to study Birgunj Sugar Factory operations

Kathmandu, August 17

A task force has been formed to study the possibility of reviving the Birgunj Sugar Factory, which has been closed for years.

According to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Minister Gauri Kumari Yadav’s secretariat says the task force was formed based on a Cabinet decision. It has been tasked with studying the factory’s current condition and preparing the feasibility assessment and necessary action plan for restarting operations.

The task force will study the closed factory’s current status, past decisions made about it, previous studies and reports on reviving it, and the steps that should now be taken.

The task force has been given 15 days to complete its study and submit a report. The team is coordinated by CDE Srikant Yadav from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, with members including a section officer from the ministry and an officer representative from the Department of Industry.

The study will examine the current condition of the factory’s buildings, structures, and machinery, and assess how usable they are. The task force will also determine whether the factory can be restarted using the existing structures and machinery or whether new technology and infrastructure would be needed.

Alongside this, the task force will study the status of land and other assets owned by the Birgunj Sugar Factory. It has been tasked with identifying problems related to these assets and preparing the necessary legal and administrative options to resolve them.
