The Nepali Congress has established a Humanitarian Welfare Fund using a portion of the party membership fees collected from its members. The announcement was made by party General Secretary Gagan Thapa during the Green Run programme held on Wednesday to mark the memorial day of BP Koirala.
According to Thapa, the fund has been launched with an initial allocation of Rs 1 million. The first phase of assistance will be directed towards displaced landless families, with particular priority given to single women and children who are unable to attend school.
“From today, we have decided to establish the Humanitarian Welfare Fund using a portion of the membership fees contributed by our party members,” Thapa said during the event.
He said volunteers from the Nepal Women’s Association would be mobilised to manage the fund. Representatives of the organisation will visit affected settlements to assess needs and help distribute assistance. Thapa also invited volunteers from the Tarun Dal and other interested groups to join the campaign.
Thapa said the Green Run was organised not only to raise public awareness about climate change but also to mark the beginning of a concrete social responsibility initiative. He added that the Nepali Congress would pursue policies and programmes aimed at making climate change one of Nepal’s key development priorities.
Recalling the legacy of BP Koirala, Thapa said the late leader had advocated inclusive democracy and equitable access to natural resources during his time, adding that those ideas remain relevant today.
Acknowledging that turnout at the event exceeded expectations, Thapa admitted there had been shortcomings in its management and apologised to the young participants. He pledged that future events would be better organised.
Thapa also announced that the Nepali Congress would launch a new nationwide campaign beginning Thursday, with further details to be made public the following day.
