A shelter home in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-4 has done asparagus farming for its cost management. The Narayandham Ashram has managed its cost by growing organic products, mostly asparagus, guava, jackfruit and other crops.

The shelter home offers food for 20 dependents and guests for free. Manager of the shelter home, Taranath Paudel, said that the crops and vegetables are being grown through a livestock and agriculture farm. The shelter home has reared cows and produces organic manure. The shelter home has also leased some land plots for 18 years and pays Rs 72,000 annually.

Of the leased land, it grows asparagus in 15 Khattha for financial backup to run the shelter home, Paudel added. It is said that asparagus in the shelter home’s farm is grown without using any chemical fertilizer and pesticide, as cow manure is enough to grow asparagus there.

The shelter home has invested nearly Rs 800,000 in asparagus farming, and the income generated from it is optimum to run the shelter home. The shelter home sells some 20 kilograms of asparagus daily during its season, and per kilogram of asparagus is sold at Rs 500 to RS 1,200.
