Foreign investment in agriculture: Entrepreneurs launch protest

Agricultural entrepreneurs announce a struggle committee to protest the government’s decision to allow foreign investment in agriculture, in Chitwan, in January 2021.

Kathmandu, January 24

Agriculture entrepreneurs have announced a joint protest against the government’s decision to allow foreign investors to invest in the agriculture sector of Nepal.

Organising an event in Ratnagar of Chitwan, 15 organisations representing the entrepreneurs say they will continue the protest unless the government withdraws the decision.

Recently, a Supreme Court bench has issued a stay order barring the government from implementing the decision until a final verdict on the case.

Earlier, organisations representing farmers and agriculture-based businesses had already protested the decision arguing it would force them to compete with foreign companies, which would ultimately defeat them.

The entrepreneurs argue the foreign investment would turn current entrepreneurs and traders into workers whereas the foreigners will reap benefits exploiting them.

They have complained that the government did not consult them before the decision although they have invested billions of rupees in the sector.
