Kathmandu, October 11

A group of sugarcane farmers from Rautahat district of southern Nepal have come to Kathmandu, demanding the Federal Parliament’s interference in making the Shreeram Sugar Mill pay its outstanding dues to the farmers.

The Sugarcane Producer Association submitted a memorandum to Bimal Prasad Shreeevastav, the chairperson of the Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumer Interest Committee in the House of Representatives.

Earlier in July, the mill had issued a public notice citing it stopped its operation forever. Along with that, the company has said it is unable to pay the price to the farmers, informs Saphindra Prasad Yadav, the organisation’s secretary.

The farmers informed the lawmakers that the company was yet to pay rs 410 million to them, urging the House committee to make sure the payment would be made before Dashain festival, which is just two weeks away.

They said they were hopeful of payment soon.
