Kathmandu, June 21

After being criticised for distributing awards on the occasion of various national days to too many people, including those who are apparently unqualified, the government has revised its rule on the medals, restricting itself into only 200 medals per year.

The Cabinet meeting held last week revised the Award Regulations, informs Maheshwar Neupane, the Home Secretary.

On Constitution Day last year, the government had awarded 634 persons.  Some of the nominees did not have a significant contribution to the state, and they had been able to secure the awards due to their proximities with political parties.

The government announces various awards on different occasions throughout the year, which the president confers on the winners every New Year in April as per the Nepali calendar. The function could not take place this year due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
