Kathmandu, August 11

Nepal Police has confirmed that Major Ajit Pratap Singh, who was caught on Saturday with 1.5 grams of brown sugar, was peddling drugs. Singh, deployed at the army’s eastern command headquarters, was apprehended by the Narcotic Control Bureau and  Itahari Police on Saturday evening.

According to an officer at the bureau, Major Singh had been selling brown sugar in small packets. The bureau, along with police started the investigation after a brown sugar user mentioned Singh’s name. The officer said that Singh had been selling a packet for Rs 1000.

The source added that four such packets were recovered from Singh. The total weight of the narcotic was 1.5 grams. Two others were arrested along with Singh, however, they were released as the police could not associate the two with Singh.

According to Itahari Police Chief DSP Ram Chandra Kharel, Singh will be kept in custody for further investigation. “We have received permission to remand him in custody. We will start a detailed investigation,” he said.

The bureau and police are being assisted by the Military Police. In other criminal cases involving army officials, the Military Police would investigate the case. However, as this is a narcotics-related case, Singh will be treated in court as a civilian.
