Kathmandu, August 1

The government of Nepal is likely to announce dates for by-elections at local, provincial and federal levels soon as formal preparations for the announcement have begun.

The Election Commission, which is responsible to recommend elections dates for the government, consulted political parties of the country about the issue on Thursday. Representatives of 18 political parties were invited to the meeting.

Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Thapaliya says the Commission will decide dates for the elections based on the parties’ suggestions and make a recommendation to the government within a couple of days.

The commission has informed that it will hold by-elections to fill 47 vacant positions. The Commission’s spokesperson Shankar Prasad Kharel says one seat is vacant in the House of Representatives of Federal Parliament and three in various provincial assemblies.

Likewise, three local bodies are functioning without the chiefs and one without the deputy.

Similarly, 38 positions are vacant at the ward level.
