Parliamentary committee endorses proposal to put DIGs in-charge of provincial police

Kathmandu, July 10

A new provision that puts Deputy Inspector Generals in-charge of the provincial police forces has been endorsed by a parliamentary committee deliberating on the draft bill.

Parliament’s State Affairs Committee endorsed the provision of a key bill, which also proposes the roadmap for adjustment of personnel to form provincial police bodies. The committee decided that DIGs shall head the provincial bodies, despite an amendment registered by former Home Minister Janardan Sharma, who proposed that Additional Inspector Generals be assigned the task.

According to committee member Jhapat Rawal, the panel is yet to decide the title the DIGs will be given when they are deployed as provincial police chiefs. Some committee members want the DIG to be given the title of ‘Police Commissioner’, others have backed the title of ‘Police Chief.’

According to the roadmap, a total of 55,000 police personnel will be assigned to work for the provincial bodies. The new law proposes that the personnel who are assigned to work in provincial bodies will be recalled to the centre as they recruit new personnel.  Committee members are yet to reach an agreement on all provisions of the bill.
