Nepal ranked 76th most peaceful country in the world

Kathmandu, June 13

A new global index has ranked Nepal as the 76th most peaceful country in the world.

The Global Peace Index 2019 published by Institute for Economics and Peace ranks Nepal in the highest position among the countries with medium status with a score of 2.0003. Nepal improved its position by 12 ranks from the previous year, according to the Index.

Among Nepal’s neighbours, Bhutan has been ranked the most peaceful in the 15th place. Likewise, Sri Lanka is in the 72nd position.

Bangladesh, China, India and Pakistan are 101st, 110th, 141st and 153rd position respectively.

Afghanistan is in the last (163rd) position of the list.

The report says, “The average South Asian score improved last year due to improvements in Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan and a slight gain in Afghanistan. However, the region still has the second lowest rank, just ahead of its neighbour MENA.”

The GPI is based on 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources, and measures the state of peace using three thematic domains: the level of societal safety and security; the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict; and the degree of militarisation.
