Shakya takes unassailable lead in race for Kathmandu Mayor

 Kathmandu, May 27

The people of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, the capital of Nepal, have elected the main opposition CPN UML’s candidate Bidya Sundar Shakya as their new mayor.

Although all votes cast during the May 14 elections are yet to be counted, Shakya has taken an unassailable lead in the race. With just over 10,000 votes left to be counted, he has a lead of over 18,000 votes over his closest competitor Raju Raj Joshi of the Nepali Congress.

Shakya’s current vote count stands at 61,000 while that of Joshi is 43,000.

Counting is expected to conclude in a few hours.
