Mixed signals: Rastriya Janamukti Party leader Shiva Lal Thapa. Addressing the protest assemly in Kathmandu on Friday, Thapa claimed the Prachanda-government will topple soon. Thapa, however, described the Charter amendment proposal as positive.

Kathmandu, January 6

CPN-UML General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel said on Friday opposition parties will not let the Prachanda-led government push the Constitution Amendment Bill through the parliamentary process, no matter what.

Pokharel said this while addressing a protest assembly that nine opposition parties are organising at Exhibition Road, Kathmandu. He accused Prime Minister Prachanda and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba of conspiring to give constitutional recognition for Hindi as official language of Nepal and make naturalised citizens eligible for constitutional positions.

However, Shiva Lal Thapa, leader of Rastriya Janamukti Party, put forth a different stance at the assembly. While promulgating the Constitution, Magarat was split into three parts, Thapa noted, adding that the government-sponsored Constitution amendment proposal has made positive changes on that front.

Issues other than provincial demarcation are not in the interest of the country, Thapa said and sought resignation of Prime Minister Prachanda. He claimed that this government will not last long.

Ek Nath Dhakal, president of Nepal Parivar Dal, also claimed that this government has lost people’s trust.
