Tenth-graders tie the nuptial knot, school expels them

Gorkha, January 19

Triveni higher secondary school based in Mirkot, Gorkha, has expelled tenth graders Samjhana Rana and Yogendra Kunwar from the school at a time when school leaving certificate examinations are round the corner.

The school says it decided to expel the students after they got married about one and a half months ago. School principal Chudamani Adhikari said the move is in line with the school management committee’s four-year-old decision to bar Triveni school students from marrying each other.

Together with their guardians, the two have come to Gorkha district headquarters to press authorities to ensure their right to education. They have already informed the district education office about the expulsion.

“Some days after marriage, I went to school. Principal Adhikari reprimanded me and had me leave the classroom,” Rana said. The principal has told me he will not let me come to school, no matter what, she said.

The two students have asked the education office to help create an environment in which they can study, pointing that SLC examinations are round the bend.

“What kind of rule is this that prevents us from going to school?” Kunwar said.  At the district headquarters, the two students are waiting for the education office to make a decision.

On his part, principal Adhikari said they will abide by the education office’s directive.

Assistant district education officer, Thakurji Tiwari, said they have directed the school concerned to create an environment where the two students can study like before.
