MCC deal will be ratified, no one can stop it: Banskota

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Gokul Banskota, speaks at a function in Kathmandu, on Tuesday, February 5, 2019.

Doti, January 1

The MCC compact with the United States will be ratifed by Parliament and no one can stop it, says Minister for Communications and Information Gokul Banskota.

Banskota, who was speaking at a programme in Doti, added, “The government will table the MCC compact in Parliament and it will be ratified.”

The Millenium Challenge Corporation agreement should not be politicised as it has no connection to the US government’s Indo-Pacific strategy. “Some people are trying to mix the two to create obstacles, but it is far from the truth,” said Banskota.

Under the compact, the MCC will provide $500 million in grants while the government will chip in $130 million for the implementation of the Electricity Transmission Project (ETP) and Road Maintenance Project (RMP).  The funds will be used to develop the Hetauda-Damauli-Butwal 400kVA transmission line and rehabilitate 305km of highways from Itahari-Kakarvitta and Pokhara-Butwal.
