News Writing Workshop with UNESCO Nepal Begins at St Xavier’s

A two-day news writing workshop, aimed at enhancing journalism skills and improving reporting standards in Nepal, began at St Xavier’s College on Wednesday. The workshop, organised in collaboration with UNESCO Nepal, marks its fourth edition and is being attended by 27 students from St Xavier’s and various government and community colleges.

This workshop represents the inaugural collaboration between UNESCO Nepal and St Xavier’s College. Chun Bahadur Gurung, the faculty lead and workshop coordinator, highlighted the project-based approach of the workshop, stating, “We are practising project-based pedagogy to enhance the quality of education. This workshop provides students with practical skills invaluable for their journalistic careers.”

The sessions cover a range of topics from pitching story ideas to drafting compelling narratives, to equip aspiring journalists with the skills for accurate and ethical reporting. Industry professionals such as Bhadra Sharma from The New York Times and educator Louisa Kamal are leading the sessions, providing participants with hands-on experience.

Saluja Chand, acting Principal of St Xavier’s, underscored the value of non-credit courses in enriching the educational experience. The workshop is being held at St Xavier’s College, Maitighar, and includes 17 students from various colleges participating in this valuable learning opportunity.
