Kathmandu, February 15

Nepali investors who traded shares in the past year have lost around Rs 235 billion in the market in the past year, figures show.

During the first six months of fiscal year 2018/19, market capitalisation in stood at Rs 1.67 trillion. However, Nepal Rastra Bank says that as of last month, the valuation of shares listed on the country’s only stock exchange has suffered a 14.1 per cent drop. Listed shares are currently valued at Rs 1.43 trillion.

It’s not just the capital that has suffered, the NEPSE index has also suffered a lot in the past year. The index, which stood at 1431.1 in January 2018 dropped by 17.7 per cent to 1178.0 as of January 2019.

The NPESE index continued to go down even on Thursday as it ended the day on 1112.78. The current size of the share market is equivalent to 47.8 per cent of the country’s GDP.

Investors say that government policy is the main reason the share market is witnessing a slump. They have called on the government to adopt measures to stimulate the market.
