Journalists demonstrate against govt across country

Journalists in Hetaunda stage a demonstration in front of Makawanpur District Administration Office, on Thursday, April 18, 2019.

Kathmandu, April 18

Members of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, the umbrella organisation of Nepali mediapersons, on Thursday staged a demonstration in front of all 77 district administration offices of the country.

The FNJ announced the protest programme on Wednesday after a journalist in Pokhara got arrested for allegedly published a report about a fraud case online.

Police have arrested Arjun Giri on a cybercrime charge, but the FNJ says online journalism does not fall under the jurisdiction of Electronic Transactions Act.

Therefore, they stated a sit-in outside the administrative offices of all districts.

Meanwhile, the Kathmnadu District Court remanded him to custody for next three days on Tuesday.

Most of the media houses in Pokhara have been disseminating messages against Giri’s arrest.
