Roshi Rural Municipality in the district has launched a scientific management of water sources and watershed conservation in a bid to ensure sustainable drinking water and irrigation facilities. The local government has forwarded the initiative in the wake of climate change impacts- drying up of water sources and shortage of drinking water.
Various international organisations working in the sector of climate change have extended support to the local government to run the programme under the integrated climate adaptation solution for Hindu Kush. The initiative would help reduce climate change impact and boost resilience of the local community. Chair of Roshi Rural Municipality, Dinesh Lama, informed that a concept paper on climate action was signed by the Rural Municipality, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Centre for Environmental and Agricultural Policy Research, Extension and Development (CEAPRED).
As per the concept paper, the activities for the programme include conservation of water sources, scientific management of watersheds, social inclusion through gender mainstreaming, gender equality, upliftment and empowerment of women, nature-based adaptation, and promotion of clean and renewable energy. A survey report has stated that 22 per cent of water sources and watersheds dried up in Roshi Rural Municipality. The multi-year project would run with the support of Global Affairs Canada.
