UML to choose its candidate for President on Tuesday

A Standing Committee meeting of the CPN-UML, in Kathmandu, on Friday, February 23, 2018.

Kathmandu, March 5

Nepal’s ruling party CPN UML will select its candidate for President on Tuesday, and it is likely that the party will back former leader and current President Bidya Devi Bhandari for the post.

The election for President is scheduled for March 13.

A meeting the party’s standing committee is to take place at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar at 4pm on Tuesday to decide the party’s candidate for the post.

According to sources, UML leader and former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal has also expressed interest to contest the election. However, with support from Prime Minister Oli, Bhandari is likely to be re-elected to the post. As Bhandari’s candidacy is also likely to be backed by CPN Maoist Centre, she is expected to win by a considerable margin.
