Kathmandu, September 7
Former Deputy Speaker and House of Representatives member Indira Rana Magar has met with Caroline Nokes, Deputy Speaker of the UK House of Commons.
During her visit to the UK, Rana met Nokes at the House of Commons in London and raised concerns over the devastating floods in Nepal, their impact, and Nepal’s demand for climate justice and compensation.
Rana highlighted the longstanding ties between Nepal and the UK and the significant contributions of Nepali Gurkha soldiers to Britain. She expressed hope that the UK Parliament would support Nepal in the wake of the disaster and urged Nokes to speak up for Nepal’s call for climate justice.
Nokes said the UK considers Nepal part of its family and assured Rana that Britain stands with Nepal during the disaster.
She also said there had been calls in Parliament to give special attention to Nepal and that the UK government had announced support for the country.
Describing climate change as a shared responsibility of all countries, Nokes pledged to support Nepal’s cause for justice.
The two also discussed the exchange of parliamentary practices. Nepali social worker Rabindra Jung Lamichhane, who resides in the UK, was also present at the meeting.
Rana also met with other members of the House of Commons to discuss the disaster facing Nepal and the issue of climate justice.
