Kathmandu, August 17
A parliamentary committee meeting scheduled to discuss the smooth supply of sugar has been postponed.
The Industry and Commerce and Labour and Consumer Interest Committee under the House of Representatives had scheduled the meeting for 10 am today to discuss the issue.
Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Gauri Kumari and Secretary at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies Narayan Prasad Sharma Duwadi had been invited to the meeting. In addition to committee members, stakeholders involved in the smooth supply of sugar were also expected to attend.
However, the committee secretariat issued a notice stating that the meeting had been postponed due to “special reasons.”
The price of sugar has risen recently, with industrialists and traders trading blame over the increase. Consumers, however, have been bearing the brunt of the price hike. The retail price of sugar has risen from Rs 95 to as much as Rs 120 per kilogram.
