Nepali Congress leader Dr Shashank Koirala has said he is ready to mediate between party president Gagan Thapa and former president Sher Bahadur Deuba to reduce tensions between the two leaders.

Speaking at a tea reception organised by the party’s establishment-opposition faction in Kathmandu on Monday, Koirala said he was willing to facilitate positive dialogue between Thapa and Deuba.

He said that although disputes and disagreements currently exist within the party, there was ultimately no alternative to bringing the party’s top leaders and factions together.

Koirala expressed confidence that the two sides would eventually reach an agreement.

Recalling the periods of BP Koirala and Pradeep Giri, he said political debates in the past were based on ideas and principles.

He expressed concern that contemporary politics had seen a decline in the quality of political language, with personal attacks and abusive remarks increasingly replacing substantive debate.
