The R N Joshi Museum of Modern Art has been established at the former residence and studio of renowned artist Ramananda Joshi (1938–1988) in Pulchowk, Lalitpur, with the aim of preserving, studying and promoting modern Nepali art.
The museum, established through the initiative of the RN Joshi Museum of Modern Art and the Ramananda Joshi Art Trust, will be formally inaugurated with an exhibition titled Imbricated: R.N. Joshi and the Making of Nepali Modern Art.
The exhibition is curated by Art historian Pranab Man Singh, who also teaches at Kathmandu University. It traces the development of modern Nepali art while highlighting Joshi’s contribution to the field.
The museum houses Joshi’s artworks alongside photographs, personal documents, correspondence, publications and other archival and historical materials. These resources will provide visitors with an opportunity to explore the development of modern Nepali art from the 1950s onward.
Trust Chairperson Nabin Joshi said the museum was established to honour Ramananda Joshi’s contribution to Nepali art and preserve the country’s artistic heritage.
Singh said the museum was envisioned not merely as a venue for displaying artworks but as a centre for art archives, history and research. The inaugural exhibition explores Joshi’s work alongside his contributions to teaching, writing and cultural activities.
The museum also plans to organise archival and educational programmes alongside exhibitions to promote research, dialogue and public participation. It will be formally inaugurated in the coming days.
