Kathmandu, September 22
Police arrested 58 foreign nationals during an overnight operation conducted at various locations in Kathmandu Valley on Monday, according to security sources.
A joint team from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office and the Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau carried out the operation.
According to police sources, 20 of those arrested are Chinese nationals, while the others are citizens of Bangladesh, South Korea and other countries.
Police have not yet made public details about the identities of those arrested or the reasons for their detention. Authorities have also not issued an official statement regarding the operation.
A security official who spoke to Onlinekhabar said the operation was conducted following a directive from Home Minister Sudhan Gurung.
On Monday afternoon, Gurung instructed CIB chief AIG Uma Chaturvedi to launch an operation against foreign nationals allegedly involved in illegal activities and take them into custody, according to the official.
Following the directive, the CIB took command of the operation and coordinated the overnight sweep across different parts of Kathmandu Valley.
It remains unclear what activities the 58 foreign nationals were allegedly involved in or what offences, if any, they are suspected of committing.
Police have yet to provide further details about the operation or the cases involving those arrested.
