Govt makes online business registration mandatory

Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection

Kathmandu, August 18

The government has asked all businesses operating through online platforms to register with the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection.

The department has directed businesses selling goods and services through websites, mobile applications, social media and other digital platforms to mandatorily register through its online portal.

The department warned that businesses operating online without completing the required legal procedures could face action under the Electronic Trade Act 2024 and Electronic Trade Directive 2025.

The move comes amid growing complaints of consumer fraud and disputes related to online transactions. The government said it has tightened regulation to make digital commerce more transparent and organised.

According to the department, the registration requirement applies to all businesses conducting transactions using computers, mobile phones or similar devices through websites, applications, the internet, intranet, social media marketplaces and other digital platforms.

The department has urged all such businesses to complete the registration process as required by law.
