OnePlus 12: Does the new flagship keep pace with other brands?

OnePlus’s flagship for 2024, the OnePlus 12 has been made official in China. The smartphone is the successor of last year’s OnePlus 11 which did okay in the market.

It has been a while since OnePlus truly lived up to its ‘Flagship Killer’ nickname. The OnePlus Open, the company’s inaugural foldable, unveiled at the end of October, has reignited excitement with its plethora of features, setting it apart from other brands in the market. However, how does OnePlus fare in delivering a standard flagship experience with its non-foldable offerings?

With a few major upgrades like the latest flagship chipset and telephoto camera, the OnePlus 12 looks to pack quite some punch.

Let us see what the smartphone provides in terms of specs.

Design and Display

The OnePlus 12’s design is very similar to the OnePlus 11. The back has a large camera module with a Hasselblad logo. The camera module is larger than that of the OnePlus 11. There are three main rear camera lenses along with a 13-channel multi-spectral colour sensor in a square-shaped placement. The flash is just above the main camera which previously in the OnePlus 11 was in the camera module itself. The rings surrounding the camera lens are circular while there is a scaled shiny ring on the camera module itself.

The back of the OnePLus 12 is made up of glass and is curved along with the frame. The frame is shiny and is made up of an aluminium alloy. It is also a bit thicker and wider than the OnePlus 11. The overall design of the smartphone is quite premium.

On the display side, the OnePlus has increased the display size by a bit from the OnePlus 11. The hole-punch camera cutout on the OnePlus 11 which was on the left side has been changed and now is in the centre.

The OnePlus 12 has a 6.82-inch 3D AMOLED flexible curved screen with a screen-to-body ratio of 93.5 per cent. The display has a QHD+ resolution of 3,168×1,440 with a pixel density of 510 PPI. Its adaptive refresh rate, ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz helps the smartphone save battery when the screen is not in use.

The screen’s brightness has a global excitation maximum brightness of 1,600nit typical value, with a local peak maximum brightness of 4,500nit typical value. It supports 1.07 billion colours and 100 per cent coverage in various colour gamut modes (Natural, Professional, and Vivid).

Additionally, the OnePlus 12’s screen prioritizes user comfort and eye protection. It features an eye protection mode by default, supporting both bright eyes and low-frequency flicker reduction, along with a dimming mode that utilises a 3Pulse+1Pulse DC-like dimming/high-frequency PWM at 2160Hz, ensuring comfortable viewing experiences in various lighting conditions.

Moreover, the OnePlus 12’s display has a lot of features for excellent viewing experience, including screen colour mode adjustments, automatic and manual brightness adjustments, screen colour temperature customisation, ultra-clear picture quality enhancement, video colour enhancement, HDR video highlight mode, screen refresh rate flexibility, and support for Dolby Vision.

The display is protected with the help of the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus® 2 for accidental dropping and scratches. It also has an IP rating of IP65 which makes it dust and waterproof.

Performance and Storage

The OnePlus 12 is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 flagship chipset built on a 4nm architecture. Its octa-core CPU doesn’t compromise either, featuring a Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.3 GHz for high-performance tasks, five Cortex-A720 cores running at 3.2 GHz for balanced performance, and two Cortex-A520 cores at 2.3 GHz for power efficiency. It is supported by the Adreno 750 GPU, which handles the graphics processing. It runs on Android 14 with OxygenOS 14 operating system for the global version whereas uses ColorOS 14 in China.

Cooling performance on the OnePlus 12 is also increased for prolonged high performance, using a massive 10,000-grade VC, dual-circulation heat dissipation, and aerospace-grade materials to efficiently manage heat with a 38,547mm² dissipation area. It has improved the thermal conductivity by 41 per cent and cooling efficiency by 400 per cent compared to traditional systems.

The OnePlus 12 is available in 12 GB, 16 GB, or 24 GB RAM options. As for storage, the 12 GB option is paired with the base 256 GB option, whereas the 16 GB option is paired with the 512 GB and 1 TB options and the top 24 GB option is paired with the 1 TB storage option.

Camera

The OnePlus 12 features a triple rear camera setup with a 50MP Sony Lightyu LYT-808 main camera sensor with a wide ƒ/1.6 aperture and optical image stabilization. The 64MP telephoto camera has 3x optical zoom and OIS for stable long-distance shots. Additionally, the 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera with a 114° field of view and macro capability at 3.5cm offers versatility for a wide view of landscapes and closeup details. The rear camera also supports 6x optical quality zoom and a staggering 120x digital zoom.

The OnePlus 12’s rear camera has a wide range of features including professional, photo, video, portrait, night scene, high pixel, panorama, movie, slow motion, time-lapse photography, long exposure, multi-view video, cute photo, AI ID photo, super text, tilt shift and XPAN.

The rear camera can capture detailed 8K videos at 24fps, along with 4K, 1,080P, and 720P videos at 60fps and 30fps. It also supports slow-motion video shooting at 1,080P (240fps) and 720P (480fps, 240fps), Dolby Vision shooting in 4K (30fps) and 1,080P (30fps), movie mode shooting in 4K (30fps), time-lapse photography shooting in 4K (30fps) and 1,080P (30fps) and multi-view video shooting in 1,080P (30fps). It has video anti-shake shooting for stable shots while video zoom extends to 3x optical zoom and up to 18x digital zoom.

The OnePlus 12 has a 32MP selfie camera with a ƒ/2.4 aperture. It also has features such as photos, videos, night scenes, panorama, portraits, time-lapse photography, multi-scene video, cute photos and AI ID photos. Video shooting capabilities include 4K at 30fps, 1,080p at 30fps and 720p at 30fps along with anti-shake capability for stable selfie videos.

Battery and Others

The OnePlus 12 features a 5,400mAh non-removable battery that easily lasts the day without hesitation. For charging, it boasts a wired fast charging capability at 100W. The device also brings back wireless charging, supporting speeds of 50W, along with a 10W wireless reverse charging feature.

For connectivity it supports Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be), Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), and 802.11a/b/g/n, covering a wide range of Wi-Fi standards and Bluetooth 5.4 for wireless connectivity with other devices. The audio system is also impressive with super linear stereo dual speakers, Dolby Atmos support, and spatial audio.

It also features a range of sensors, including geomagnetic induction, under-screen proximity sensor, under-screen light sensor, acceleration sensor, gravity sensor, gyroscope, support step counting function, infrared remote control, under-screen colour temperature sensor, rear spectrum sensor, hall sensor and an under-display optical fingerprint sensor. Its vibration motor has a customised upgraded version of the extra-large X-axis linear motor, known as the bionic vibration motor Turbo, offering enhanced haptic feedback.

The OnePlus 12 is available in three colour options; White, Black and Green.

The expected prices for the OnePlus 12 in Nepal are Rs 105,000 for the 12GB/256GB option, Rs 115,000 for the 16GB/512GB option, Rs 125,000 for the 16GB/1TB option, and Rs 140,000 for the 24GB/1TB option.
