Nepali Congress: Deuba, Koirala to contest a run-off for the presidency

Kathmandu, December 14

Sher Bahadur Deuba and Shekhar Koirala will contest a run-off for the presidency of the running Nepali Congress party.

The run-off will be held today as none of the five contenders of the positions secured 50 per cent of the cast votes during the election on Monday.

Here is the final tally as announced by the election committee*:

  • Total votes cast: 4,679
  • Invalid: 76
  • Sher Bahadur Deuba: 2,258
  • Shekhar Koirala: 1,702
  • Prakash Man Singh: 371
  • Bimalendra Nidhi: 250
  • Kalyan Gurung: 22

Now, the final result will depend on Prakash Man Singh and Bimalendra Nidhi, the next two contenders of the election. Reports say Deuba has sent Bal Krishna Khand to woo Singh onto his side.

The voting is likely to begin early afternoon today whereas the results are expected by the late evening.

Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress election committee will count votes for other positions after completing the presidential poll.
