
Dhangadhi, June 25
A Nepali Army sergeant was killed and a lieutenant injured in a grenade explosion during a military firing exercise in Kailali district.
According to Kailali Police spokesperson DSP Yogendra Timilsina, the incident occurred in the Jalapa Community Forest area of Mohanyal Rural Municipality-7, where a firing drill was being conducted.
The deceased has been identified as Sergeant Himal Bikram Bista of the Nepali Army. He sustained critical injuries while detonating a grenade and was rushed to Lalratna Hospital in Lamki, where he died during treatment at around 12 noon.
Timilsina said Bista suffered severe injuries to his right palm and multiple shrapnel wounds across different parts of his body in the explosion.
Lieutenant Himraj Joshi, who was standing nearby, was also injured by grenade fragments. His condition is reported to be stable.
Joshi was airlifted to Kathmandu by a Nepali Army helicopter for further treatment.
The explosion occurred at approximately 9:17 am on Thursday while personnel from the Sudurpashchim Division Training School, Gorange Barracks, were conducting a firing exercise in the area.
Police said further details of the incident are being investigated.
