Kathmandu, November 3
The government is conducting its two-day National Vitamin A Programme today and tomorrow to administer vitamin A capsules and deworming medicines to children across the country.
Under the programme, vitamin A capsules are being administered to children aged six to 59 months, while deworming medicines are being given to children aged one to five years.
According to Leelabikram Thapa, chief of the Nutrition Section at the Department of Health Services, around 2.1 million children are expected to receive vitamin A capsules, and approximately two million children will be given deworming medicines.
He urged parents to take their children to the nearest convenient distribution centres at a suitable time to receive the medicines.
Thapa said 52,000 female community health volunteers and 10,000 health workers would be mobilised for the programme.
The government administers vitamin A capsules and deworming medicines to children free of charge every year in Kartik and Baisakh.
The regular distribution of vitamin A capsules began in 1993, while deworming medicines have been administered since 1999 to reduce the risk of health complications and malnutrition among children.
