Kathmandu, September 8
The first edition of the Lichchhavi Cinema Festival will be held in Kathmandu from September 10 to 14. The arts and cultural centre Lichchhavi House is organising the festival with support from Kathmandu Metropolitan City and the European Union.
The festival aims to open a new dialogue between Nepali and international cinema. Ten feature films from Asian and world cinema will be screened, presented in a curated format using full DCP theatrical projection technology.
Organisers say the Nepali film “Elephants in the Fog”, which made history by winning the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, will also be presented here. Also on the list are Deepak Rauniyar’s “White Sun” from Nepal and Bhutanese director Khyentse Norbu’s acclaimed film “The Cup.”
Also being screened are Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” from India, “Ghost School” from Pakistan, and “The Red Phallus” from Bhutan. Landmark works by world-renowned directors, Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Stalker” (Russia), Mathieu Kassovitz’s “La Haine” (France), Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days” (Germany/Japan), and Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s “Memoria” (Thailand), are the festival’s main highlights.
