The much-anticipated Hollywood film Tenzing, produced by technology company Apple, received its Nepal premiere at a special screening organised by the British Embassy on Monday evening.
The screening was held at the QFX multiplex at Civil Mall and attended by members of the House of Representatives, diplomats from the United Kingdom, the United States and European countries, celebrities, filmmakers, mountaineering figures, and the film’s producers, director and cast.
Actress Manisha Koirala and Tenzing actress Thinley Lhamo also attended the event.
Director Jennifer Peedom and representatives of New Zealand-based film production company See-Saw Films were present at the screening. The British Embassy said proceeds from the event would be deposited into the Natural Disaster Rescue Fund established by the government for flood relief.
The two-hour film received a positive response at the special screening. It was filmed in Nepal’s Everest region, Patan, Bandipur and Mustang. Nepali technicians involved in the production, including location manager and cinematographer Bishnu Kalpit, also attended the event.
The film tells the story of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa’s historic first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. It follows the life of Tenzing Norgay, played by Genden Phuntsok, and portrays his courageous journey as he joined a British mountaineering expedition and led the climbing team.
Phuntsok plays Tenzing, while Thinley portrays Norgay’s wife. Tom Hiddleston plays Edmund Hillary, and Willem Dafoe portrays the leader of the mountaineering team.
The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last week. It is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in the United Kingdom and the United States on October 9 and will be available on Apple TV from October 16.
