Heavy rain forecast in five provinces, thunderstorms expected in two

Kathmandu, July 17

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast heavy rainfall in some areas of five provinces and thunderstorms in parts of two others, as monsoon conditions continue to affect the country.

According to the department, monsoon winds are currently active across Nepal, with an additional influence from a low-pressure system centered around Uttar Pradesh, India. The monsoon trough lies close to its average position.

This afternoon, most parts of the country will experience generally cloudy skies. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in some areas of Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces. A few locations in these provinces may also witness heavy rainfall.

Scattered light to moderate rain and snowfall are expected in the high-hill and Himalayan regions. Additionally, thunderstorms are likely in some parts of the Terai regions of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.

The department has warned of possible flash floods, landslides, and debris flow due to the predicted rainfall. Urban and lowland areas face a risk of inundation, and residents in vulnerable areas are advised to remain cautious.

Water levels in rivers, streams, and rivulets may rise, potentially affecting daily life, agriculture, health services, tourism, roadways near riverbanks, and air travel. The public and concerned authorities have been urged to take necessary precautions and make preparedness arrangements.
