Thirty-one gates at the Koshi Barrage have been opened as water flow in the river continues to rise.
Chief District Officer Ishwori Prasad Aryal said the barrage is currently under a “red alert” status. According to him, the flood discharge at the Koshi Barrage has reached 240,000 cusecs.
The flow, however, remains below levels recorded in previous years, when the Koshi River saw floods exceeding 500,000 cusecs.
“The Koshi Barrage is currently under a red alert. However, flood levels of up to 500,000 cusecs have been recorded in previous years,” Aryal said. “There is no need to panic at this point, but we are on alert.”
Vehicle movement across the Koshi Bridge has not been halted.
“There is no situation requiring us to stop vehicles at present. If the flood level rises further, we will take a decision as necessary,” Aryal said.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged residents in downstream and flood-prone areas to remain highly alert until the day after tomorrow, as the water level in the Saptakoshi continues to rise.
