Eight prisoners escape from Dolpa jail through tunnel; probe committee formed

Kathmandu, November 1

Eight inmates have escaped from the District Prison in Dunai, the district headquarters of Dolpa. The escape through a tunnel dug in the ground has raised questions about security at the prison.

How were the inmates able to dig a tunnel and escape suddenly from a prison that is under round-the-clock security surveillance? Why did the police on duty not notice anything while the tunnel was being dug? These questions are becoming pressing.

Anil Raj Giri, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and chief of the District Police Office in Dolpa, said a committee has been formed to investigate these questions.

According to him, a three-member probe committee has been formed under Inspector Binay Singh. The other members are one representative from the District Administration Office in Dolpa and one staff member of the National Investigation Department.

DSP Giri said the details of how the inmates escaped will come out only after the committee submits its report. According to him, the incident took place on the night of October 30, and he received the information the next morning.

There were 17 inmates in the prison, and eight of them escaped through the tunnel.

“It appears they broke through the wall and dug a tunnel to escape. We are investigating,” DSP Giri told Onlinekhabar.

The escaped inmates are:

  • Kaliprasad Rokaya, 29, of Tripurasundari Municipality-7
  • Hari Bahadur Budha, alias Dhan Bahadur, 28, of Tripurasundari-4
  • Yagya BK, 25, of Borekot Rural Municipality-1
  • Tilak Bhandari, 38, of Athbiskot Municipality-5, West Rukum
  • Ram Bahadur Kami, 32, of Aathbiskot-10
  • Resham Rana, 28, of Kumakh Rural Municipality-5, Salyan
  • Kapil Pariyar, alias Kailash, 19, of Nalgad Municipality-9, Jajarkot
  • Adesh Bhandari, alias Nishan, 32, of Aathbiskot-3

All eight are still at large. DSP Giri said police have been deployed to search for them. According to police, the inmates appeared to be in their normal state until 10 pm, and they are believed to have started digging the tunnel after that. Police said the inmates seem to have used a rod to dig the tunnel.
