Kathmandu, August 20
A Common Tern (Sterna hirundo), known locally as Vayu Fyalphyale, has been spotted at Mas Bhim Pukhu (pond) in Khasi Bazaar, Kirtipur.
Locals said the Common Tern has been seen at the pond for the past five to six days. According to nature and wildlife photographer Supradipta Neupane, there is no previous record of the bird being spotted in the busy Kirtipur market area.
Many bird enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and members of the general public have visited the pond to observe and photograph the bird. Only one Common Tern has been spotted. People have been surprised to see that it does not fly away even when they approach it.
The Common Tern is found along the coasts and around rivers and lakes in Europe, Asia, and North America. In Nepal, it is a migratory bird.
The bird has previously been recorded in various wetlands of the Kathmandu Valley, including Rani Pokhari, Taudaha, the Bagmati River, and the Manohara River. Although it is a migratory visitor, its tendency to remain close to people has made it relatively easy to observe. Its primary food is fish.
