Kathmandu, October 7

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development is preparing to count the number of all farmers across Nepal.

Agriculture Minister Ghana Shyam Bhusal says the census will be conducted via all 753 local governments. The local units have already been sent with funds required for the programme.

An official in the ministry says a national campaign will soon be announced.

In the census, the information will also be collected regarding major crops, availability of loan and grant for agriculture purposes among others.

Following the count, the ministry will also distribute ‘farmer certificates’ to those registering with their ward offices and local units. The ministry hopes it will help them have an identity.

Ultimately, the ministry will prepare a national agriculture database.
