The Department of Tourism has issued a safety advisory for trekkers, mountaineers and support staff amid forecasts of heavy rainfall across Nepal later this week.
The department issued the advisory on Wednesday, urging climbers and trekkers who have already reached Himalayan destinations or are travelling there for the autumn season to remain alert and plan their activities according to the weather forecast.
According to the Nepal weather bulletin, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds is possible across the country from Friday, September 25, to Sunday, September 27.
The forecast has also raised the risk of landslides, floods and soil erosion, while snowfall is possible in high-altitude areas.
The department said the adverse weather could affect trekking routes and mountaineering activities and advised people to avoid travelling during the period wherever possible.
Those who need to travel have been urged to do so with heightened caution and by taking the latest weather conditions into account.
The department has also asked trekkers, climbers and expedition organisers to review their plans based on weather forecasts and make necessary arrangements in advance.
It has particularly called on health facilities in areas where trekking and mountaineering permits have been issued, including Samagaun in Gorkha, the Khumbu region and Manang, to ensure uninterrupted and accessible medical services.
Health facilities in Kathmandu and Pokhara that provide treatment for altitude-related illnesses have also been asked to remain prepared and provide services without disruption.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology continues to monitor rainfall, flooding and other weather-related risks through its warning and monitoring systems.
The advisory comes as Nepal enters the autumn trekking and mountaineering season, when thousands of domestic and international visitors travel to the country’s mountain and trekking destinations.
