Opposition to decide stance on impeachment after assessing ruling party’s position: Angdembe

impeachment

Kathmandu, November 2

Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Bhishma Raj Angdembe has said opposition parties will decide their position on the impeachment issue only after assessing the ruling party’s stance and preparations.

Angdembe made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists about a meeting of opposition parties held at the Nepali Congress parliamentary party office on Monday.

Noting that the ruling coalition itself has yet to reach a decision on whether to pursue impeachment, Angdembe said opposition parties were waiting to see how the ruling side would bring the issue forward.

He stressed that a serious matter such as impeachment required sufficient discussion within political parties. There would be little meaning, he said, if a party expressed one position while its parliamentary party pursued a different course.

Angdembe also said opposition parties were unclear whether the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party’s (RSP) parliamentary party was following the instructions issued by the party.

“We do not know whether their parliamentary party is following the instructions they have given,” he said. “What matters in such a serious and important issue is how the parties represented in Parliament express their concerns, and how Parliament takes those concerns forward.”

He said opposition parties would sit together and formulate a common position once the RSP presented a credible stance on impeachment.

“Let them come forward with a credible position. After that, we, the opposition parties, will sit together and decide our position,” Angdembe said. “Once we reach a common position, we have stood together in support of good work in the past, and we will continue to do so.”
