Land rights representatives meet parliamentary committee chair

Kathmandu, October 30

Representatives of organisations working on land rights have met the chairperson of a parliamentary committee and submitted a special appeal seeking solutions to the problems faced by communities deprived of land rights.

A joint delegation from the National Land Rights Forum Nepal, Community Self-Reliance Centre and National Land Network met Ashok Kumar Chaudhary, chairperson of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee under the House of Representatives.

The delegation called for resolving the problems of landless people and informal settlers, making necessary amendments to land-related laws, ensuring the effective implementation of the Land Problem Resolution Commission and guaranteeing meaningful participation of affected communities.

In response, Chaudhary said ensuring land rights for genuine landless people was the state’s responsibility. He added that their rights should not be sidelined in the name of resolving land-related problems.

Stating that land-related issues would be identified separately and addressed through transparent criteria and impartial procedures this time, he stressed the need to address unresolved issues through legal amendments and expedite the distribution of land ownership certificates.
