A team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has returned after police refused to allow it to meet former Chief Justice Cholendra Rana, who was taken into custody overnight.
The NHRC team waited for around 45 minutes at the gate of the Criminal Investigation Office in Teku but was not allowed to meet Rana before leaving.
Police took Rana from his residence in Maharajgunj late Saturday night and brought him to the Criminal Investigation Office. He is currently being kept in the office of SSP Santosh Khadka.
Police have said Rana was brought to the office overnight after receiving information about a “security threat” to him.
However, legal experts have questioned the manner in which police took Rana from his residence and the legal basis for keeping him at the office.
Rana’s detention has also raised questions over why authorities have not publicly explained the nature of the alleged security threat or the specific legal grounds for taking him into custody.
