Kathmandu, September 23
The Raju Lama Foundation, a charitable organisation run by singer Raju Lama, and the social organisation Small World have distributed relief supplies in Tetangche village, Amachhodingmo Rural Municipality, in Rasuwa, an area affected by Bhotekoshi flooding.
The two organisations have also provided health services to those affected. Singer Lama said 3,500 kg of food grains and medicine were distributed to affected residents of the village, which had been cut off from the road network after the flood.
A four-hour health camp was also run there with the participation of senior physician Ganesh Gurung. After road access was severed, the two organisations arranged to fly relief supplies to Tetangche by helicopter, with nine shuttle flights used for the purpose, Lama said.
Lama, who has since returned to Kathmandu from the affected area, said delivering relief supplies had been extremely difficult.
“There’s no road at all above Dhunche, which makes distributing relief supplies difficult. A helicopter is the only way to get there,” he said. “It took us 17 hours just to get the relief supplies there.”
Lama said the shortage of food and other problems in the affected area remain severe.
“Even those who have money aren’t able to buy things. People can manage with the clothes they have, but victims told us they don’t know how to survive without food,” he said. “Crops haven’t grown either, and without crops it’s hard to sustain life. They’ve asked that other organisations help as well.”
Meanwhile, Small World has rescued a 9-year-old boy from Amachhodingmo Rural Municipality and brought him to Kathmandu. The boy, who lost all his family members in the flood, is currently sheltering at Yellow Gumba, and the organisation has also taken responsibility for his education.
Small World is also preparing to provide relief supplies and other services to 200 more families in Bidur Municipality, Nuwakot, another flood-affected area. Plans include distributing gas stove sets, clothing, and kitchen supplies to these families.
Both Small World and the Raju Lama Foundation are active in social and charitable work.
