Two arrested for alleged hundi transactions worth Rs 1.57 billion

Police have arrested two people in Biratnagar on suspicion of conducting hundi transactions worth more than Rs 1.57 billion.

Shambhu Prasad Sah, 56, of Rani in Biratnagar Metropolitan City-15, and Suraj Prasad Sah, 35, of Biratnagar-17, were arrested on Thursday by a police team deployed from the District Police Office, Sunsari.

According to Chandrabahadur Khadka, information officer at the District Police Office, police analysed the banking transactions of individuals suspected of involvement in hundi dealings based on information received about such activities. The analysis showed that Shambhu Prasad and Suraj Prasad, in collusion with other individuals, had used personal and firm bank accounts to conduct hundi transactions amounting to Rs 1,576,439,340.

Khadka said the two were arrested for investigation into offences related to hundi transactions under the National Penal Code, 2017, as well as offences under the Organised Crime Prevention Act, 2010, and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2008.

Police said both arrested individuals have been kept at the District Police Office, and further investigation is underway.
