Nepali Congress leader Prakash Man Singh has said that the party’s 15th General Convention will be held in accordance with its rules, statute and democratic values.
Speaking to journalists after paying tribute to the statue of Ganesh Man Singh at Shobha Bhagawati in Kathmandu on Friday, Singh said preparations for the 15th General Convention were already underway.
“We are determined to hold the 15th General Convention in accordance with the rules, regardless of the circumstances,” he said. He said a special general convention was not the Nepali Congress’s preference and argued that it would not be appropriate to violate rules and procedures to fulfil anyone’s personal ambition.
Stating that political issues and agendas are the main concerns of political parties, he said the independence of the judiciary must be respected. He said the courts should deal with judicial matters, while political parties should make decisions on political issues.
“If political issues and agendas are to be decided by the party, judicial matters should be handled by the courts,” he said. “The Nepali Congress believes in democracy and the independence of the judiciary.”
Recalling that BP Koirala and Ganesh Man Singh had prioritised their political objectives and national interests when they returned to Nepal in 2033 BS under the policy of national unity and reconciliation, he said the Nepali Congress had not deviated from its democratic principles even after the Panchayat system won the 2036 BS referendum following the student movement.
He said the political change in 2046 BS became possible as a continuation of that stance.
“Even today, the Nepali Congress must set an example by adhering to its rules, procedures and democratic values. We are determined to hold the 15th General Convention in accordance with the rules, regardless of the circumstances,” he said.
He said it was their responsibility to hold the general convention in accordance with the spirit and essence of the party statute and the Constitution of Nepal and to protect the rule of law, people’s rights and national interests.
