Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has urged former party president Sher Bahadur Deuba to attend and inaugurate the party’s 15th general convention, saying his participation would be a matter of honour for the party.
Bodies of five Chilime Hydropower employees handed over to families
The bodies of five employees who were trapped at the Chilime Hydropower Station have been handed over to their respective families. Chilime Hydropower Company Managing Director Baburaja Maharjan said the bodies of engineer Santosh Pandey, electrical supervisor Minraj Moktan, security guards Shyam Bahadur Thapa Magar and Tilak Bahadur Thapa Magar, and Nepal Electricity Authority employee Lakpa Tamang were identified and handed over to their families.
Himalayan glaciers melting 65 per cent faster amid growing climate risks
The Himalayas are undergoing rapid changes, with the rate of glacier melting increasing by 65 per cent compared with a decade ago, according to a new report. The report highlights growing risks from glacial lakes, melting snow and unstable mountain slopes. It also points to black carbon as a major contributor to glacier melt. Black carbon originating from South Asia accounts for about one-third of glacier melt, while industrial sources, particularly brick kilns, contribute 32–42 per cent of the human-generated black carbon accumulating in the Himalayan region.
Sadak Sujhav App launched to report damaged roads
The ‘Sadak Sujhav’ app has been officially launched to make the repair of damaged federal roads in Kathmandu Valley more effective. The Road Division Kathmandu under the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development formally launched the app following a successful trial. Citizens in Kathmandu Valley can now register complaints and provide suggestions through the app regarding the repair of damaged roads under the federal road network.
Bill proposes mandatory dustbins in public places within 3 months
The government is drafting legislation that would require dustbins to be installed in public places.Under a bill registered in the House of Representatives that revises and consolidates existing waste management laws, any person, group, organisation or body generating waste would be responsible for managing that waste itself. Local governments would be required to arrange for its collection within their jurisdiction.
Australia tightens visa rules, most international students to be barred from bringing families
Australia is tightening visa rules for international students and other temporary migrants, with most foreign students set to be barred from bringing their partners and children to the country while they study. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced the migration reforms on Thursday as the government seeks to reduce net overseas migration and tighten controls on temporary visa holders.
Singaporean climber dies while attempting to climb Mt Manaslu
A foreign climber died while attempting to climb Mt Manaslu in Samagaun of Chumnubri Rural Municipality-1, Gorkha. According to police, 50-year-old Singaporean national Lau Wee Seng died on Thursday. District Police Office Gorkha DSP Raj Kumar Shrestha said Seng died while returning to the base camp from Camp II after he had difficulty walking and sat down at the spot.
24-year-old arrested after CIB uncovers Rs 1.34 billion in alleged hundi transactions
A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Dhanusha on suspicion of involvement in hundi transactions worth more than Rs 1.34 billion over the past two years. Ajay Kumar Mukhiya of Shahid Nagar Municipality-4 is currently in the custody of the District Police Office, Dhanusha. A joint team from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police and the District Police Office arrested Mukhiya from Shahid Nagar-4 at around 5:20 pm on Tuesday.
