Kathmandu, September 17
Nepal suffered a second consecutive defeat in women’s volleyball at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, losing 3-0 to Indonesia on Thursday.
Nepal needed a victory to keep its hopes of reaching the quarterfinals alive but was beaten in straight sets.
Nepal lost the opening set 25-12 before putting up a stronger fight in the second. However, Indonesia held its nerve to win the set 25-21.
Indonesia maintained its momentum in the third set, taking an early lead and eventually sealing the match with a 25-20 victory.
Nepal had also lost its opening Group A match against hosts Japan in straight sets.
With only three teams in Group A, Nepal’s second successive defeat means Japan and Indonesia have secured their places in the quarterfinals with one group match still to play. Their meeting will determine the group winner.
Nepal’s two defeats have ended its hopes of reaching the quarterfinals. The team will now compete in the classification matches for ninth to 14th place.
Nepal’s next opponent will be determined after the remaining group-stage matches are completed.
A total of 14 of Asia’s top teams are competing in the women’s volleyball tournament at the Asian Games.
The official opening ceremony of the 20th Asian Games is scheduled for September 19, but competitions in several sports began before the ceremony.
Basketball, football, volleyball and modern pentathlon competitions are already underway, while women’s cricket and teqball also began on Thursday.
