The government has prepared a bill on waste management.
The bill covers the entire waste management process, including waste reduction, source segregation, collection, transportation to transfer stations, and reuse and recycling at processing centres. It also includes provisions for producing compost, gas and energy from waste, as well as the safe final disposal of residual waste.
Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam said the bill is ready.
“Nature has given us one of the most beautiful countries in the world. But today, the growing amount of waste on roads, rivers, settlements and public places is posing a challenge to our natural beauty, environment and public health,” she said. “With the objective of changing this situation, we are preparing to register a landmark waste management bill in the Federal Parliament.”
According to Gautam, the bill’s most important aspect is that it addresses waste management as a complete cycle, from waste generation to final disposal.
She said the bill also incorporates modern concepts such as zero waste, the circular economy and extended producer responsibility into the legal framework.
“Simply collecting waste is not the solution. This bill has organised the entire cycle, from waste generation to final management,” Minister Gautam said. “It is a historic legal step towards building a clean, healthy and beautiful Nepal.”
