Kathmandu, September 3
Australia is preparing to send a team including specialist drone operators to Nepal to support search and rescue operations following the devastating floods.
According to Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, the 15-member team will include personnel from Fire and Rescue NSW and the Queensland Fire Department, along with drone specialists.
The team will use advanced drone technology for rapid mapping and aerial imaging. The Australian government said this will help Nepali authorities make search and rescue operations more effective.
The Nepal government formally requested the assistance after accepting Australia’s continued offers of support.
Australia has said it is also prepared to provide further assistance for search and rescue and recovery efforts.
Australia has already sent 19 personnel to Nepal, including staff providing consular and humanitarian assistance, as well as personnel from the Australian Federal Police and the Department of Defence.
Thirty-eight Australian citizens in Nepal remain unaccounted for following the floods and disaster.
